Larry Mason Earns Two More Podium Finishes at U.S. Majors!

Buttonwillow, CA - Larry Mason earned two second-place finishes during Round Four of the SCCA U.S. Majors Western Conference Championship Series on April 26th and 27th at Buttonwillow Raceway Park near Bakersfield, California. The fourth round of the series featured all of the podium finishers from the first race at Auto Club Speedway and more. On and off rain showers dampened Friday’s open test session, but Team LMR was still able to get in some dry laps at the end of the day.

The race event only had one qualifying session and Mason showed the way to the rest of the field by grabbing pole position for this race! However, his excitement was soon dampened as his car weighed in just underweight and so his time was disallowed. “We had set the fuel level on Friday for Saturday morning’s session, but we just miscalculated a bit,” said Mason who was disappointed with the ruling. “However, in racing they have rules and regulations for a reason, and we accepted the penalty, although that meant that we had to start last. I figured, well at least we’ll have some good video action if I can come through the field.”

Come through the field he did. Just after the drop of the green flag there was a huge pileup in Turn One that took out a few cars including the winner of rounds one and two. Mason was able to just squeak by and was on a charge. That charge was dampened as they went to full course caution, but Mason was already up to third place in class! He had a fierce battle with that driver as the gap would shrink or grow depending upon traffic. “About three fourth’s distance, the other driver had quite a lead on me and I didn’t know if I could catch him. I got a break in traffic and really closed the gap and out-braked him on the last lap to grab second place.” Mason really earned this result as he battled from start to finish.

“My Polar RC3 GPS heart rate monitor registered a peak of 167 beats per minute in the race! It was an exciting race and quite a workout.”

Sunday’s race saw Mason grid second in class. He was passed at the start by the same driver he had battled with the day before but was able to re-take second place two corners later. By that time the leader (with new tires) had checked out and although Mason pushed hard (on older tires), he was unable to close the gap to the leader and took home another second place finish in the 45 minute race. “I want to give special thanks to Fred MacIntosh for helping out on Friday and Tom Engelsman, Stella Castro and Sonia Mason for the rest of the weekend. We learned a tremendous amount this weekend that will pay dividends as the season continues. In the meantime, that champagne sure tasted good again!”
