Wilcox, AZ - Larry Mason earned two, second-place finishes during Round Two of the SCCA U.S. Majors Western Conference Championship Series on February 22nd and 23rd at Inde Motorsports Ranch. The Second round of the series was hotly contested but Mason was able to come away with strong results, especially as it was his first time visiting the facility. “I’m very satisfied with these finishes as we improved every session throughout the weekend and ended up less than a tenth of a second shy of the winner’s best time on Sunday!” said a smiling Mason. What’s impressive about that feat is that the winner is also a local for this facility and is a member of the country club track.
Mason qualified fourth in class for the Saturday race and immediately jumped into third on the first lap. It was then a matter of stalking second place and he was able to make that pass a few laps later. It wasn’t smooth sailing after that as the now third place driver filled Mason’s mirrors and took a look down the inside of the tight right hand hairpin before the main straight on several occasions but he was never close enough to make the move stick. That driver ended up missing a shift and Mason pulled away to finish second.
In Sunday’s race, Mason started second in class but was passed on the first lap and demoted to third. He stayed within striking distance and after about half a dozen laps was able to close in and pounce as the second place driver started encountering traffic. Mason was able to weave his way around the traffic and pulled away to finish second again.
“My competitors were pushing really hard, and I had to as well to make my passes stick and eventually pull away. My Polar RC3 GPS heart rate monitor registered a peak of 166 and 164 beats per minute in the two races! I really want to thank Tom Engelsman from Auto Diagnostic Services for his fantastic support this weekend. I couldn’t have done it without him.” said Mason.
These podium finishes have now elevated Mason to second in the Western Conference standings as he pursues an invitation to the SCCA National Runoffs.
